Why enroll? The Certificate in Higher Education Teaching at Cleveland State University helps junior faculty, adjuncts, teaching assistants, and new educators build the instructional competencies and professional credentials valued across colleges and universities.

Upon completion of the course, students earn a CSU micro-credential, issued as both a digital badge and a digital certificate, which includes 6 CEU's.


Cleveland State University part-time faculty, adjunct faculty, current CSU grad students or recent graduates (2024 and 2025) with an M.A. or Ph.D. may register for a discounted, flat-rate. To do so, contact Nancy Pratt at n.pratt@csuohio.edu for details. All other CSU alumni qualify for a 10% discount on tuition.

New in 2026: The Certificate in Higher Education Teaching (CHET) can now be taken for graduate credit by enrolling in ALD 690. This option is ideal for CSU graduate students and others seeking special topics credit. Participants earn both a digital badge and a certificate, and the credential will be recorded on your official CSU transcript.

Certificate in Higher Education Teaching

Earn your Cleveland State University Certificate in Higher Education Teaching to enhance your skills for full-time and part-time teaching roles in colleges and universities. Led by experienced faculty, this program covers pedagogy, student learning, innovative teaching, assessment methods, Diversity and Inclusion, and online teaching. With six learning units, six faculty-led discussions, and a comprehensive learning portfolio, you'll gain valuable insights in just 10 contact hours per unit. Culminating Assignment

The certificate requires a culminating assignment, which consists of a revised syllabus and a reflective summary that showcases the thoughtful integration of pedagogical principles and instructional strategies developed throughout the course.

Certificate completion requirements:

  • Completion of the six learning units.
  • Attendance at five faculty-led discussion sessions (every-other-Thursday, 6:00-7:00 PM)
  • Completion of the culminating assignment.

Non-credit certificate courses are not eligible for financial aid. To use financial aid, you must be admitted as a CSU student and enroll in ALD 690 for credit.
 


Prerequisites

Prerequisites: Ideal candidates have a graduate degree, are working faculty, or are enrolled graduate students (at CSU or another university). Applicants with a Bachelor's degree and at least five years of work experience in areas of teaching interest wanting to teach in non-credit continuing and professional education also qualify.
