Post-Doctoral Hires in J-1

Post-Doctoral hires will almost always come to CSU as J-1 Research Scholars. Please follow the steps to initiate a J-1 Sponsorship

Insurance

In addition to their CSU employee sponsored health insurance coverage, all J-1 Research Scholar Post-Docs (and their dependents in J-2) must purchase a standalone evacuation and repatriation insurance in order to comply with J-1 federal regulation 22 CFR 62.14. None of CSU employee health insurance options cover the repatriation of remains and medical evacuation to the home county both of which are mandatory per federal regulations. Standalone evac and repat insurance policies for J-1 Exchange Visitors are readily available for enrollment online with a credit card and are easily found through a basic internet search. Furthermore, the regulation stipulates that if a J-1 exchange visitor willfully fails to maintain the minimum required level of health insurance for themselves or their J-2 dependents, their participation in the J-1 program will be subject to termination.

J-1 exchange visitor program check-in and orientation

Post-Doctoral Fellowship hires will complete both the New CSU Employee orientation through the department of Human Resources as well as a J-1 Orientation and J-1 immigration check-in with the Center for International Services and Programs. If a J-1 Orientation and Check-in are not completed within 30 days of the start date on the Form DS-2019, they may lose their immigration status.
