Have you had any significant internships/co-ops/careers while at Cleveland State?
LO: During my time at Cleveland State, I worked multiple jobs. However, my most meaningful internship/experience came from working for Cleveland State University's Campus Activities Board (CAB). CAB is an organization on campus dedicated to fostering a sense of belonging among students while collaborating with various departments to enhance student engagement and put on events for the students to attend. I joined CAB in my first semester and remained committed to it throughout my entire college journey. Initially, I took on the role of an unpaid assistant/intern, dedicating 5-8 hours a week.
During my time there, I had the privilege of working alongside many talented individuals, collaborating to plan events, manage logistics, market events, and assist with countless other details. After my first two years as an assistant/ intern, I applied for the marketing board position and was thrilled to be selected. This role provided me with the creative freedom to shape our marketing efforts while introducing new responsibilities. As the marketing chair, I managed our social media presence, maintained the website, sent out mass email newsletters, and coordinated marketing meetings with the team, among other tasks. These experiences allowed me to apply what I learned in the classroom and significantly expanded my skill set. During this time, I had the opportunity to explore a variety of marketing platforms that greatly enhanced my understanding of digital marketing, including Mailchimp, Hootsuite, and Constant Contact. These experiences provided me with valuable insights into effective marketing practices and the strategies that successful companies employ.
How would you describe the connections you have made with the faculty and staff at Cleveland State?
LO: During my time at Cleveland State, I have been fortunate to make numerous meaningful connections that have significantly impacted my life. My journey began with the award of the Glasscock Scholarship, which introduced me to an incredible community right from the start. This scholarship not only eased the financial burden of my education but also became a gateway to a network of inspiring individuals who shared similar aspirations and values. From the Glasscock family, who exemplified generosity and commitment to my education, to Anne Nelson, who has been a guiding light and mentor helping with everything along the way, and all the other members who I now get to call my friends, the relationships I have built have been transformative.
While I made connections before I officially started, they only grew in numbers from there. During my time at Cleveland State, I chose to stay involved in an array of extracurriculars. From CAB to club sports, clubs, and the College of Business, I was able to connect with so many people along the way. While I did make many friends during my time, there were a number of professors and faculty who left a lasting impact.
I would like to start by mentioning Toni Paoletta. I have had the privilege of taking several marketing classes with her, building the connection. My most recent class was my capstone, which stands out as the one I benefited from the most. Toni consistently works hard to make her classes both engaging and informative, but in the capstone course, we had the opportunity to apply the skills we developed over the past four years in a practical setting. She showed immense confidence in us and empowered us to restructure the marketing strategy for a nonprofit organization, including their social media tactics, website, and more. This class was undoubtedly the most beneficial experience I've had, providing me with valuable insights into the real world while building outside connections. Alongside Toni, there were many other professors and faculty who I was able to make a connection with. Including professors Alexsandra Sukhoy, Alan Schmiedicker, Jessica Peck, and faculty member Micaela Ostheimer. All of whom I've had the privilege of making meaningful connections and who have had impacts on my education.
Without the opportunities provided by Cleveland State and the connections I have made here, my personal and professional life would look entirely different. The insights, encouragement, and diverse perspectives I have gained through these relationships have equipped me with the tools needed to tackle challenges and seize opportunities. I wouldn't be where I am today without all of the amazing people who shaped not just my career but also the person I am today.
How has Cleveland State inspired you for your future?
LO: Within my four years, Cleveland State has inspired me for my future in several meaningful ways, both personally and professionally. One of the biggest influences has been the people I’ve met here, including students, professors, faculty and mentors who have helped shape my goals and mindset. Many of whom have gone beyond the classroom to offer advice, connect me with opportunities, and push me to be the best version of myself. Their ongoing support and belief in me have made a lasting impact and has continued to inspire me. Another way I've been inspired is by being a part of the Glasscock Scholars Program. This program has connected me with a community of driven, like-minded students and mentors all helping to open doors and create the best version of myself. Through this scholarship, I’ve gained valuable insights, built strong relationships, and grown more confident in my ability to succeed beyond college.
On top of that, the leadership roles I’ve held at Cleveland State, including being president of Women’s Club Soccer and the marketing chair for the Campus Activities Board, have helped me grow as a communicator, organizer, and teammate. These experiences taught me how to lead with purpose and make a positive impact in my community. Finally, being in the heart of Cleveland has shown me the value of staying connected to the city I love and how important it is to be close to my family and friends. Cleveland State has helped me realize that I can build a meaningful and successful future right here, following in my mother's footsteps.
How do you think you have fulfilled Cleveland State’s mission?
LO: Cleveland State's mission is to provide infinite opportunities while serving value in collaborating with communities, serving students, and unleashing creativity. I believe I’ve fulfilled Cleveland State’s mission by fully embracing the values of while also achieving engaged learning, community involvement, and personal and professional growth. Throughout my time at Cleveland State, I’ve been intentional about getting involved both inside and outside the classroom. As president of Women’s Club Soccer, marketing chair for the Campus Activities Board, a tutor, and more, I’ve helped create inclusive, engaging experiences for fellow students, contributing to a vibrant campus community.
These roles taught me leadership, communication, teamwork, what it means to give back, and more. Academically, I have leveraged Cleveland State’s resources to develop as a well-rounded business professional. My participation in the Glasscock Scholars Program exemplifies my commitment to academic excellence and community impact. This program has allowed me to connect with faculty and peers in meaningful ways and has challenged me to reflect critically on my goals and values. Altogether, my time at Cleveland State has been about more than just earning a degree, it's been about growing into a leader, giving back, and preparing to make a difference in my field and my community.
