Veterans Day 2025

November 10, 2025

Dear Campus Community,

Cleveland State University will be closed tomorrow, Tuesday, November 11, in observance of Veterans Day. In the United States, this federal holiday is a time for us to express our appreciation to those who have served in the military and to remember their sacrifices.

Because federal holidays are rooted in our national history, they offer us an opportunity to reflect on our past. Although Veterans Day is a day to commemorate all American veterans, it was originally designated to honor Americans who served in World War I. Recognized each year on November 11, this date was chosen in remembrance of the armistice of 1918, which was reached at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, effectively ending the conflict of World War I. In 1926, Congress passed a resolution to establish November 11 as a day “designed to perpetuate peace through good will and mutual understanding.” By 1954, the holiday was expanded to honor all American veterans for their service.

Growing up with family members in the military, I learned this history at a young age and was reminded of it each November on Veterans Day. I also understood that the debt we owe our veterans and our military-connected families for their commitment, bravery and sacrifice is one we can never fully repay. Yet, our expressions of sincere gratitude are an important way in which we can show how much we value them.

Cleveland State University is proud to be a community that includes students, faculty and staff members who have served in the military or come from military-connected families. To our veterans, thank you for your service and for being a part of CSU.

Sincerely,

Laura Bloomberg, PhD
President
