General Education at Cleveland State University

Cleveland State University's General Education (GenEd08) curriculum consists of knowledge and skill components considered to be critical for all University graduates to master in the subject matter areas listed below. As a student at Lorain County Community College (LCCC), you may choose to take these GenEd08 courses at LCCC or at CSU. Please contact a LCCC advisor for guidance on courses required to receive your associate's degree.

Prerequisites (Students who do not meet these prerequisites may need to complete additional credits):

  • College-ready in MATH and ENG
  • 2 years of the same foreign language completed in high school

Students must meet the following admission requirements to take Education courses at CSU:

  • Completion of 30 credit hours of college-level work
  • 2.75 cumulative GPA
  • Earn a grade of "B-" or better in at least one college-level English and one college-level Math course OR earn a sub-score of 18 on the Math and English & Reading sections of the ACT or equivalent normed assessment of mathematical, reading and writing achievement 
  • Successful completion of a civilian background for both BCI/FBI

  • Moderate-Intensive Intervention Specialist

Foreign Language 

Students who graduated from high school in 1987 or later are required to complete one of the following:

  • Two years of a single foreign language in high school.
  • An introductory level sequence of a single foreign language (generally, two semesters of 100-level study).
  • ASLG courses at Lorain County Community College do not apply toward the Foreign Language Deficiency (FLD).

PORTFOLIO REQUIREMENT

CSU's College of Education and Human Services requires its students to prepare electronic portfolios documenting their growth and achievement in twelve outcomes.  At CSU the portfolio process begins in EDB 242. Students taking Professional Course equivalents elsewhere should retain papers, projects, and other course artifacts for future incorporation into their CSU portfolios.
